On Tuesday 2nd December, two teams of Year 6 children competed in the annual Sports Hall Athletics tournament at The Polesworth School against other local schools. The children took part in a number of track and field events in which individual and team scores were collected together in order to produce a team score for each school, or in our case each class. Although we didn’t progress into the final this year, the children all enjoyed taking part in the event. It was also a valuable opportunity for them to experience the facilities at The Polesworth School and to gain an insight into what they will be able to do when they move up into Year 7.
The Cross Country team have now ran two races and we are extremely proud of their commitment and efforts. One race was in October and the other was Wednesday of this week.Â
This week there were 45 runners in the Year 3/4 girls’ race, a special mention goes to two girls who have come in the top ten in both races - Holly (Yr3) and Phoebe (Yr3). Well done, girls! In the Year 3/4 boys’ race, this week, there were 50 runners and a special mention goes to Jacob (Yr4) for being in the top ten for both races and Alfie (Yr3) and Wade (Yr4) for being in the top ten for this race. This week, there were 40 runner in the Year 5/6 girls’ race, a special mention goes to two girls who came in the top ten in both races - Indie (Yr6) and Eva (Yr6). Well done, girls! In the Year 5/6 boys’ race there were 45 runners and a special mention goes to Jenson (Yr5), Archie W (Yr5) and Thomas (Yr6) for coming in the top ten in both races and to Nathan (Yr5) and George (Yr5) for coming in the top ten in the first race and finally to Archie C (Yr5) for coming in the top ten in this race. What an amazing start Birchwood has made to the cross country season, we look forward to finding out how the team gets on in the next few races on Wednesday 14th January 2026 and Tuesday 10th February 2026.Â
Please can I ask that cross country tops are returned to me by Monday 1st December as we have a big sporting event happening on Tuesday and I need them all back.Â
Thank you for your support with this,
Mrs Atkins
PE subject leaderÂ
On Wednesday, a group of Year 6 children took part in a hockey tournament, the team did well and considering how cold it was, kept smiling throughout. They played five matches, winning 1, drawing 2 and losing 2. Overall, we came fourth. Well done team, you showed super teamwork!
Last Friday, a group of Year 4 children took part in a dodgeball competition. They had great fun and did really well. The team came second overall and are now in the finals today. We look forward to hearing how they got on. Well done and good luck for today.Â
On Tuesday, a team of Year 4 pupils proudly represented Birchwood at the Newton Shield Football Tournament held at Pingles in Nuneaton. The event featured seven teams, each participating in 7-minute matches against every other team. The Birchwood team triumphed in five games and suffered one defeat, securing second place overall. Congratulations to all the children for their outstanding teamwork, consideration, and respect towards one another and their competitors. They were incredibly proud to represent Birchwood at this sporting event.
Some of the children from Year 4 took part in a cricket tournament at Atherstone cricket ground on Tuesday. They performed brilliantly, demonstrating some excellent batting and fielding skills and working collaboratively as a team. They also showed consideration and respect towards the other school teams that they played against. After winning four of their matches and losing two, they finished in fourth position, narrowly missing out on the bronze medal position. Well done Year 4 cricket team!
We got selected to run for Warwickshire at the National Primary Cross County Finals on Saturday. We travelled to Stoneleigh to take part in the event. The Year 4 boys’ race was 1.6 kilometres long and 84 boys ran it. Jenson came 23rd with a time of 6 minutes and 22 seconds. The Year 5 boys’ race was 2.8 kilometres long and 164 boys ran it. Thomas came 109th with a time of 9 minutes and 4 seconds.
We were both nervous before our races, the place we ran at was massive and there were lots of people there. We were really surprised how well we did, even though we were both out of breath when we finished the race. We had chips after the race!
Overall, the Warwickshire teams did really well. Both Year 3 teams and the Year 4 boys’ team came first and received gold medals. The Year 4 girls’ team came second and received silver medals. The Year 5 boys’ team came fourth, the Year 5 girls’ team came sixth, the Year 6 girls’ team came seventh and the Year 6 boys’ team came eighth.
Thomas and Jenson
The cross country season is nearly at its end, and the results are in! The scores from the first six races have been collated to determine the winning schools. This year, we have excelled, securing four team trophies and four individual awards.
Birchwood claimed both the Year 3/4 boys' team trophy and the Year 3/4 overall team trophy. Additionally, we triumphed in the Year 5/6 girls' category, as well as the Year 5/6 overall team trophy.
The individual winners include Jenson (Year 4) in 1st place, Archie W (Year 4) in 2nd, Thomas (Year 5) in 3rd, and Thea (Year 6), who also achieved 3rd place.
Furthermore, nine of our pupils participated in the Warwickshire Cross Country Championships on Saturday, representing the North Warwickshire team against competitors from South, East, and Central Warwickshire. They performed admirably, giving their utmost effort as always. Jenson (Year 4), Maddison (Year 4), and Thomas (Year 5) stood out with their exceptional performances and have secured spots on the Warwickshire team for the National Cross Country Championships at Stoneleigh this Saturday, we look forward to finding out how they get on.
We are immensely proud of each and every one of our cross country runners; their dedication, determination, and commitment have been truly remarkable. We would also like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all parents and carers who have supported the cross country season this year; this achievement wouldn't have been possible without your assistance.
On Thursday 12th December, our Year 5/6 girls' football team took part in the finals of the Warwickshire 5-a-side indoor football tournament, held at Kingsbury Sport and Community Centre. After progressing through the heats unbeaten, the girls were full of hope and confidence.
They came out of the blocks quickly and comfortably beat St. Benedict's 4-1. This was followed by another strong performance, winning against Newton Regis 3-0.The final game was decisive, as Birchwood faced Kingsbury, who had also won both of their matches. The girls saved their best performance for last, and although they drew the match 1-1, they kept a very strong Kingsbury team at bay and were, by far, the superior side.
After both schools finished with 8 points and identical goal differences, the winner was determined by the number of goals scored. We were delighted to learn that we had netted one more goal than Kingsbury, making us this year's champions. A huge well done to Maisy, Holly, Eva, Sienna, Amelia, Thea, and Zoe!
Well, what a cross country season we have had and the results are in!
The year 3/4 girls team won the large schools competition, the year 3/4 boys team also won the large schools competition and therefore Birchwood were the year 3/4 overall winners.
Not just that, Indie was the first place individual winner and both Jenson and Maddison were the third place individual winners.
As well as that, year 5/6 girls and boys teams were the overall winners in the large schools competition.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate every single one of the cross country runners who all contributed to us gaining this excellent result. The trophies have now taken pride of place in our trophy cabinet in the entrance foyer, please come and take a look.

On Wednesday 22nd November, the second cross country race took place at the Pingles Stadium in Nuneaton. We are really proud of all the children who ran, again it was a long course which included a tiring hill near the end. All children showed superb strength and never gave up with many of the children beating the place they came in the last race. Didn’t our new sports t-shirts look smart! We look forward to the third race on Wednesday 13th December and the fourth race in January.
Before half term, two teams of year 5 and 6 children took part in a hockey tournament. Our teams were called the Birchwood Bullets and the Birchwood Bulldogs. The Birchwood Bulldogs drew one game, lost three games and won one game. The Birchwood Bullets drew two games and lost three games. Overall, the Birchwood Bullets came sixth and the Birchwood Bulldogs came fifth. Both teams played with great team spirit, they showed great resilience and never gave up. Well done, we are very proud of you all.

They played excellently and both teams came joint second and brought silver medals home with them. Well done, we are very proud of you all.
Our first game was against Outwoods, it was a close match but we sadly lost 1-0. Luckily, Oscar B saved 8 shots during that match.
During the second game, Oscar S crossed the ball into the box then Dougie finished it off to score our first goal.
For the last game, Alfie scored his first ever goal and Teddy nearly scored from a goal drop kick but unfortunately the other team scored making it 1-1.
Overall, we came 6th place, but all of the games were very tight and the whole team played exceptionally well for the whole tournament.
Action Shield Team.
On Wednesday 12th July, forty Key Stage 2 children represented Birchwood in the Area Athletics Competition at Tamworth Athletics Club competing against seven other schools. Each child competed in a track event (running) and a field event (throwing or jumping), some also had the opportunity to be in the relay team as well. The children were an absolute credit to us – they showed determination, teamwork, sportsmanship and self-belief. Despite the weather, (the first time it has rained at this event in the 17 years it has been running!) we came 2nd overall, with 601 points. We are very proud of all of the competitors, well done!
On Wednesday 16th February, seven girls from Year 5 and 6 joined Mr Coleman to attend the North Warwickshire Girl's indoor football tournament at Kingsbury Sports Centre. Birchwood played a total of 3 games against Outwoods and Kingsbury A and B teams.

Some of Birchwood's Year 5 and 6 children headed off to Atherstone this week to attend a Hockey tournament. The children really enjoyed themselves and as always tried their 'Birchwood Best'. Our Year 5 team came 5th and our Year 6 team came 1st. Well done to all of the children who played.
'I feel really proud of myself and the rest of my team especially as this was our first proper hockey match,’ George.
‘It was really exciting and fun to play. Even though some of the other teams were older and a lot bigger than us, we really tried our best,’ Frankie.
On Wednesday 29th June, some of our year 3 and 4 children competed in a dodgeball competition. They worked well as a team, showed great sportsmanship and most importantly, had fun! Well done everyone!
Some of our Year 6 children had a lot of fun at the Sports Hall Athletics Competition before half term and managed to come second place from the schools that took part in North Warwickshire.
'I did vertical jumping which was exciting. There were also many relays including the obstacle relay, the 6 lap relay and the 4 lap relay. I also took part in the chest bounce which was fun and amazing. Javelin throwing and the triple long jump was also incredible. As a team, we did many more things that were equally as exciting,' Korlie.

Birchwood have now progressed through to the next stage of the competition competing against schools from Nuneaton and Bedworth. Year 2 cannot wait for the next competition.
In total there were seven schools, across three pitches. We played six games; we won four, drew one and lost one. Birchwood was the highest scoring team so we secured a place in the final match against Warton Primary School. After an extremely close match, Birchwood beat them by half a rounder, securing a place in the next round in two weeks time.
All children played with passion, teamwork and spirit and were praised for their sportsmanship. We wish them all good luck at this event and look forward to finding out how they have got on.
Thank you to everyone who came to support us at the event.
