Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Offer

At Birchwood Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all our children achieve their potential in their time with us and have a firm foundation on which to build in their future beyond.

Our curriculum is based on providing ‘Rich opportunities and memorable experiences’ for all, no matter what their needs or abilities.  We focus on looking at the needs and progress of the individual child to ensure that all are succeeding in their learning journey.

Children’s progress is continually monitored throughout school by class teachers, and detailed and careful records are kept.  On occasions, we find a child is not making the progress that we would expect, and when this happens we have discussions with parents/carers and put in place steps to support the child.

Partnership working is vital to the success of children, and as such we are always keen to involve parents/carers at every stage to ensure that they understand how their child is being supported and work with us to help them even further.  We hold regular meetings with all parents whose children receive additional help and support and the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENDCo) is always happy to answer any queries parents may have.  Children’s views are also included in each review of their progress through our one page profile and older children also attend the meetings if they wish to.

Once we have identified that a child would benefit from additional assistance, support and extra help can be put in place in for a range of reasons; educational, social, emotional and mental health, or physical.  Support may last for a varying length of time, from a few weeks up to much longer term help and support.
