Grandparents' Lunch

Grandparents play a key role in our children’s lives. We increasingly see more of our Grandparents undertaking the morning or afternoon school run to support working parents. They also support our school by attending many of our calendar events and school performances.

At the end of every term we welcome into Birchwood a set of Grandparents from across school. This is an opportunity for us to thank them for all the work they do for our children and school.

Their visit to Birchwood begins with a meet and greet with our ‘Grandparent Lead’ member of staff, who gives them a tour of our school and talks them through our approach to learning and our school curriculum. Each of the Grandparents then gets to join their Grandchildren in class to take part in a morning learning session.

At dinnertime the Grandparents are treated to a school meal and join their children in our school dinner hall. Afterwards they all gather together for tea and a slice of cake.

In the afternoon all of the Grandparents and children take part in a shared craft activity, directed by our Grandparent Lead Teacher. Together they create seasonal crafts that they can take home with them as a souvenir of their visit.

At the end of their day, Grandparents are invited to leave a comment in our school visitor’s book. It is clear from the positive messages we receive how much the Grandparents enjoy spending time with their Grandchildren in school. They love to see how children learn today compared with their own school experiences. They are also very complimentary about our school staff and the learning behaviours of our children.

As pillars of our community, it is nice to hear how positive they are about our school and are huge supporters of all things Birchwood. It is also nice for them to know how much they are appreciated by their families and by us at school.

If you would like to be considered for a future Grandparent Lunch in school, please fill out a copy of the form that will be emailed out to all parents next term. If oversubscribed, then Grandparent’s names will be drawn from the hat.
