Dinosaur Stomp
Acorn and Chestnut had a lovely start to the week with a walk to the local post-box. As part of our Geography learning we have been looking at the local area and landmarks that are familiar to us. We also explored maps and how we can plot routes to help us know where to go. Last week we looked at a map of the local area and plotted a route to the local post-box. On Monday we followed that route to post an Easter card to Polesworth Abbey. The children loved following the route on the map and seeing lots of familiar landmarks on our walk.

This half term we have been enjoying music lessons with Mrs Fui. We have been learning music through a Sing Up unit titled Five fine bumble bees. In this unit, we have learned to sing the Five fine bumble bees counting song in call-and-response and have played along to it using percussion instruments.
We have had lots of fun learning to program a Glow and Go Bot. We had to create algorithms to instruct the robot to get from one place to another.
We made an amazing discovery in our classroom when we came back to school after the half term break – a giant egg! We had lots of questions – Where did it come from? What was inside the egg? How did it get there? Who did it belong to? Throughout the week, we observed the egg cracking and when we arrived on Friday, it had fully cracked open but there was nothing to be found.
It was only when we got back to school on the following Monday, that we discovered what had been in the egg. It had been a dinosaur! There were photographs of it exploring our classroom and a note from its parents thanking us for taking care of the egg and letting us know that the baby dinosaur was now safely back with its family. We hope it might come back to visit us soon.
We had an amazing, fun-filled day celebrating World Book Day!

Winter Wonderland

Number Day kicked off with us coming to school in our number themed clothing. We loved looking at all the different numbers we could find on everyone's clothes. We then explored the book 'The Rabbit Problem' by Emily Gravett and were amazed at how many rabbits there were by the end of the book. We sang our months of the year song to help us remember the order of the months as we turned each exciting page.
During PE, we used the story as inspiration for our dance lesson. We started off as lonely sleeping rabbits in a field. Once we woke up, we found a partner and became two hopping rabbits. After another sleep, we jumped around and found another partner set to join up with to make four jumping rabbits. After joining up again to make a group of eight skipping rabbits, we all joined together to make the biggest group we could.

We have been enjoying our time learning in the outdoor areas, working as a team, using our imagination, designing and building, and developing our gross motor skills.
This half term we are focusing on team games in our PE lessons. Coach Owen has been teaching us how to travel in different directions, move with a ball, pass a ball with our feet and throw a ball to another person.
We have been learning about height and length in our maths lessons. Using our star words 'long, longer, longest, short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller, tallest' we compared our height, shoe size and the distance we could throw a bean bag.
Reception have loved engaging in learning based around our new theme of Winter Wonderland and have especially enjoyed learning about freezing and melting, and how water can change. Making and eating ice lollies was our favourite part. We were eager to see if the flavoured water we poured into moulds would freeze after putting them in the cold freezer. We checked them the next day and they had frozen. Everyone enjoyed eating their lolly but we had to eat them quickly before they melted in the warm classroom.
