Spring 1
No Place Like Home
In Year 1, we had lots of fun during Number Day. First, we looked at the numbers on our clothes, and Miss Aston asked us questions such as, who had the greatest number, who had the smallest number, and who had a number between 20 and 30.
After reading The Rabbit Problem, we noticed that the rabbit used a calendar to record how many rabbits there were each month. After practising the Months of the Year song, we completed an activity where we had to identify the missing month on each calendar. We then created our own class birthday calendar and discussed questions such as, which month had the most birthdays and whether June had more or fewer birthdays than October.
Finally, we solved our own rabbit problem. The rabbit grew one carrot, but each week the number of carrots doubled as more and more of his friends came to visit for tea. We used pictures and practical resources to help us work out how many carrots he had grown after six weeks.
As part of Safer Internet Day, Mr Bailey came into school to give Year 1 and Year 2 an assembly to talk about staying safe online, with this year’s theme being ‘Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’.
The children watched some short videos of their favourite characters, in and around school and were asked to spot the AI fails, where we could tell it was not real. We then looked at some real videos of characters coming to life, through an iPad. We talked about the importance of gaining permission, especially when sharing images, pictures or AI clips and if we didn’t get permission, how this might make someone feel.
Our growth so far from our autumn planting! They are doing so well!
Goldilocks was delighted with the instructions we wrote to show her how to make porridge.
Elm 1 had a lovely afternoon visiting Polesworth Library. We explored all the wonderful books and some of us chose one to take home and read. On our walk back to school we saw lots of ponies in a field as well as ducks and swans swimming on the river. Thank you Polesworth Library.
The children have been really excited over the last couple of weeks with the growth of the bulbs we planted in autumn. They're really coming along!
To get ready for writing our instructions for Goldilocks next week, where we tell her how to make a bowl of porridge, we followed a set of instructions called ‘How to make a pirate hat.’ We also looked closely at the special features of instructions.
Imagine our surprise when, after the Christmas holiday, we found out what had been happening in our classroom
