Autumn 2

World War 2

This week, Year 6 have been designing and making their phone cases. After making paper templates, to ensure they had the correct sizes, they then cut out their fabric and used either running stitch or over stitch to join the front and back sections together. They then added a fastening and decorated with their chosen designs. Many of the children had little experience of sewing before the project but they were very proud of what they accomplished.

Willow 6 were so excited to receive their Winter Books today. Thank you Team Birchwood!

To celebrate Christmas, Year 6 learned and performed some Christmas carols and songs for an audience of their parents and grandparents. They particularly enjoyed learning ‘Rocking around the Christmas tree’ and ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ which they performed with Makaton.

Year 6 had been learning about the Charleston dance in PE and creating their own routine.

Year 6 have been practising different stitching techniques ready to use when they make their own mobile phone cases in Design and Technology. We have tried out running stitch and over stitch.

This year for the Christmas Fair Year 6 decided they wanted to do something for the pets in our lives so they made Christmas themed dog treats. The biscuits were cut into festive shapes then packaged up ready to sell. We hope all the lucky dogs who receive them enjoy them this Christmas!

On Tuesday 2nd December, two teams of Year 6 children competed in the annual Sports Hall Athletics tournament at The Polesworth School against other local schools. The children took part in a number of track and field events in which individual and team scores were collected together in order to produce a team score for each school, or in our case each class. Although we didn’t progress into the final this year, the children all enjoyed taking part in the event. It was also a valuable opportunity for them to experience the facilities at The Polesworth School and to gain an insight into what they will be able to do when they move up into Year 7.

Darwin's Delight

The Year 6 Eco-councillors picked apples and pears from the Birchwood orchard ready for us to use in their DT cookery lesson. After washing the fruit, they used the bridge and claw cutting techniques to prepare the apples and pears. Then they carefully measured out the butter, flour and sugar and rubbed together to create crumbs for the crumble topping. Many children enjoyed the crumble so much they took the recipe home to make again for their families.

On Monday 13th October, Year 6 enjoyed an exciting visit to Twycross Zoo to support their science learning on evolution and adaptation. As part of the trip, the children took part in a fascinating educational session, where they explored how different species have evolved over time and how specific features help animals survive in their changing habitats. After the session, they spent time observing the animals around the zoo, thinking carefully about how each one had adapted to its environment.
In PE lessons this half term Year 6 have been working on team games as part of our outdoor and adventurous activities. In this game we had to work as teams to carry equipment back to our base without using our hands or feet to carry or kick the items. The children had to think creatively and realised that working together was often the key to success.

This half term, Willow 6 have been learning about Charles Darwin and his theories of evolution and natural selection. As part of this learning, they have learned about how animals and plants have adapted to their environments over generations. They have also looked at human evolution and they ways in which we have evolved from our ancestors.
