Spring 2

Monarchs

Hazel 1 have used our knowledge of primary colours to mix and create secondary colours. We also challenged the children to make different shades of these secondary colours. This was a practice before we have a go at our own piece, inspired by the artist, Paul Klee.

Today we worked in small groups to explore ways to cut slices of bread into two equal/unequal parts. We checked by laying the two parts on top of each other, making sure that each part was equal in size. Finally we used the star words to talk about how we knew that we had cut our bread into halves.

Year 1 are looking at the story of the ‘Smartest Giant in Town’ by Julia Donaldson. We have been looking at actions to add to the story to help us remember the main parts for when we begin writing the introduction to the story next week.

We had an amazing, fun-filled day celebrating World Book Day!

Hazel class were lucky enough to have one of our wonderful governors in to read a story to our children on World Book Day. They loved the story and loved hearing about Mrs Woodall’s cat Cassie chasing pom poms and leaving them as surprises for her in her home!

Our spring bulbs are beautifully in bloom!

We have been comparing two sets of numbers to find the difference.

Year 1 have been looking at classifying animals by their diets. We learned about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Sorting the animals into these three groups, we then played bingo to see if we had organised them correctly!

Hazel 1 had a fantastic time visiting the library. We walked down from Birchwood, noticing the route taken and buildings that we passed as we will then add them to a map in our next Geography lesson.

Spring 1

No Place Like Home

As part of Safer Internet Day, Mr Bailey came into school to give Year 1 and Year 2 an assembly to talk about staying safe online, with this year’s theme being ‘Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’.

The children watched some short videos of their favourite characters, in and around school and were asked to spot the AI fails, where we could tell it was not real. We then looked at some real videos of characters coming to life, through an iPad. We talked about the importance of gaining permission, especially when sharing images, pictures or AI clips and if we didn’t get permission, how this might make someone feel.

Our growth so far from our autumn planting! They are doing so well!

Today we made our chairs for baby bear as Goldilocks had broken his. We used the skills we have learned about strong and stable structures to make a chair that was exactly that - strong and stable.

Following on from our previous maths learning, we have been grouping items into tens and ones.

We have been learning different jumps in gymnastics as well as the log roll. Our log rolls were brilliant and we’ll be learning a new one each week!

Hazel class have been looking at addition calculations and working them out using the strategies we have been learning about in Year 1. We have tried to use the most efficient strategy such as counting on, near doubles, number facts and bonds, as well as making ten. Some of us even saw that adding with a tens number, we can add the ones first and then add the ten back on!

We have had a fun afternoon thinking about our chairs for baby bear. Following on from our structures work, we had a go at creating some joining techniques this afternoon to help us think about this when we plan our chair designs

As a class, we explored a range of existing chair designs. We discussed their stability and comfort in order to plan our own designs for preparation into our own chair designs.

The children have been really excited over the last couple of weeks with the growth of the bulbs we planted in autumn. They're really coming along!

In Maths today we used bead strings to make ten and beyond. The children were fantastic at using their number facts to tell if the answer would be less than ten, equal to ten or more than ten.

As Hazel 1 have been exploring and identifying structures in DT, we went on a walk around school to see what types of structures we could find!

Year 1 have started to learn about instruction writing. This week we have ordered instructions and then had a go at following them to make pirate hats.

Imagine our surprise when, after the Christmas holiday, we found out what had been happening in our classroom.
