Misty Mountains, Winding Rivers
Redwood 4 engaged their scientific inquiring minds by investigating changes in states of matter. They conducted experiments involving freezing and melting, making careful predictions and observations.
Redwood 4 enjoyed practising more of their cooking skills, this time making the delicious French inspired dish, Ratatouille. They used the claw and bridge cutting techniques to chop a variety of seasonal vegetables, blanched and peeled tomatoes and carefully fried onions and garlic.
Redwood 4 had lots of fun celebrating Number Day. We loved ‘dressing up for digits’ and sharing our number themed outfits with our friends.
We then read ‘The Rabbit Problem’ by Emily Gravett, which helped us learn about the Fibonacci sequence. We discovered that this special sequence of numbers are found in many areas of nature and then investigated this with fruit. We were amazed to find out that the Fibonacci sequence could indeed by found within the seed patterns and segments. Reading the book also inspired us to make links with some real-life maths, including looking at temperatures, recipe ratios and taking part in some energetic ‘rabbitercise’.
Later on, we had fun practising our multiplication speed and recall by joining in with the Times Tables Rockstars ‘NSPCC Rocks’ challenge. We also put our skills to the test by completing a series of mathematical themed escape rooms and testing our mental arithmetic with a special 6-7 themed darts game.
Governor, Mr Potts came to speak to Year 4 about his mountain expedition to (6189m) Imja Tse (Island Peak) in the Himalayas, Nepal. He had heard that we had been learning about mountains and rivers in our geography topic and thought that we would enjoy hearing about one of his first-hand experiences of climbing a mountain. The interesting talk allowed us to recap on our knowledge about mountains and learn more about the dangers of mountain climbing and the area of Nepal.
