Mad About Minibeasts

Larch Visit Reception Class

Today, Larch visited the Reception classes to share their science knowledge about the life cycle of a butterfly. They showed photographs of the caterpillars they have been caring for at different stages of their development and shared many interesting facts they had learned.

The Reception children enjoyed learning about the butterfly life cycle and asked some thoughtful questions. It was wonderful to see Larch confidently sharing their knowledge and supporting the younger children with their learning.

Well done to both Larch and Reception for a fantastic learning experience!

Reception enjoyed dressing up in their World Cup kits and colours.  We took part in a FIFA World Cup football workout and learned exercises that build strength, balance and co-ordination to help us become amazing footballers.

Acorn and Chestnut classes have thoroughly enjoyed our Sports Day afternoon. We had lots of fun and had a wonderful time cheering each other on. Well done to Acorn class as the overall winners, however all of our reception children deserve huge congratulations for all their determination and perseverance.

Children in Acorn and Chestnut classes were faced with a complete mystery. There were a selection of vegetables locked in boxes, police tape and green glitter and green balls scattered around. We investigated and discussed what we thought was happening and as the week progressed more and more clues appeared, a superhero mask and cape and then a wrapped up present. The mystery was unravelled! Supertato is our new key text. I am sure that the next few weeks will be a mixture of fun, adventure and discovery.

Summer 1

The Sights and Sounds of Africa

Reception have been going quackers over our latest visitors.

Last week we were super eggcited to receive a special delivery of duck eggs.  We only had to wait a couple of days until the ducklings delighted us with their appearance.  We were able to move them from their incubator to their special cage once they were dry and fluffy.

We have been learning how to care for them and have loved watching them grow. This week we even helped them learn to swim.  The ducklings quickly took to the water and had fun jumping in and diving about.

It has been the most incredible experience and one we won’t forget.

This week the children in Reception have been thinking about healthy eating. We went to our Food Technology Room where we had the opportunity to make our very own fruit kebab. We used the bridge cutting technique to chop banana and strawberries to put on our skewer. We then added pear, apple and pineapple. We loved the different fruity smells and spoke about the texture of the different fruit, the apple was tricky to push onto the skewer! The most exciting moment of all then came when we got to taste our fruit kebab. The children enjoyed the crunchy pear and apple, soft banana, juicy pineapple and sweet strawberry!

This half term the children are exploring the story of Jack and the Beanstalk through Talk 4 Writing. It's been a really interesting week meeting The Giant and Jack and trying to decide who is the villain in this story? The children have completely engaged with this text and are avidly helping the Giant to become friends with Jack and overcome their difficulties. This has led to beautiful caption and sentence work.

It's so much fun to have PE taught by the Villa coach Owen, he always has the best games and can get us moving! This half term we are learning all about ball skills, working on throwing, catching and control. Look at the wonderful learning taking place outside. Wednesday afternoons are quickly becoming our favourite days of the week!

Acorn class have been enjoying learning all about Africa this week. We got creative in the painting area making African inspired masks. The children did really well painting and decorating them.

During Summer 1, Reception children will be learning all about the sights and sounds of Africa. They will be immersed in wonder of this cultural masterpiece of a continent. From the nature, landscape to the music and even their crafts it's a wonderful learning adventure for all. Here we have a small selection of the beautiful learning taking place.
