Road Trip USA!
Oak 3 have been putting their Design and Technology (DT) skills to the test by designing and building their very own bridges!
The children explored a range of strengthening techniques to create strong, stable structures that could safely support a toy car as it crossed from one side to the other. They used their creativity and problem-solving skills to test their ideas, make improvements and overcome challenges along the way.
It was wonderful to see such fantastic teamwork, determination and imagination throughout the project. Oak 3 should be incredibly proud of their achievements and the bridges they created!
Year 3 explored the design and architectural style of Frank Lloyd Wright. We practised creating different tones with HB pencils and we practised drawing and shading 3d shapes. We then designed our own building, inspired by Frank’s use of pattern, shape and nature.
Oak 3 enjoyed an afternoon of cooking. They sliced onions using the bridge and claw knife techniques, rolled mince beef, added herbs crushed garlic using a garlic press, made a burger sauce and finished by garnishing their burger, before tucking in.
They also learned about the importance of hygiene, understanding the dangers of cross contamination and learned where beef comes from (reared from cattle).
This half term, Year 3 have been learning all about computing and how digital devices work.
We started by learning about input, process and output. We used a toaster as an example: the bread goes in as the input, the toaster heats up and cooks the bread as the process, and the toast pops up as the output. We then sorted different digital devices into groups to decide whether they are used to input or output information.
We also learned about connections, both online and offline. We talked about how we are connected to our family and friends, and how they are connected to other people too.
To help us understand how an online network works, we used wool to pass messages between different devices. Without a network switch, things quickly became very tangled! We then tried the activity again, this time using a network switch to help messages travel between the devices.
We all agreed that using a network switch was a much quicker and more efficient way to send messages. It was also a lot less tangled!
To support their learning about America, Year 3 used the huge world map to locate continents, the equator and hemispheres. We then used the atlases back in the classroom to support us when locating North America, South American and the United Kingdom on a world map.
Our first day in Year 3 has been busy! We have been creative making our own USA flags, learning fascinating facts about the stars and stripes along the way. The adventure didn’t stop there — we crawled through the scorching desert, surfed the waves in Hawaii, weaved between towering New York skyscrapers, and leapt over snapping alligators in Florida! It was a fun-filled, all-American day to spark curiosity and set the stage for our new learning journey.
What a fantastic start to Year 3 we have had! This morning when we arrived in school, a large brown suitcase had been dropped off at the office with Year 3's name on it! We had no idea who it belonged to, or where it had come from. We soon realised the suitcase belonged to Paddington Bear! We didn't know where he was going on holiday, so one by one we looked at items inside and thought about where he could be going! Inside were sunglasses, gloves, a baseball glove, a Canadian pin, a cowboy hat and neck scarf and the American flag! The children were fantastic at inferring where he may be going, and luckily they received confirmation from a letter at the bottom of the case that confirmed Paddington was going to North America! It was our job now to research facts about North America to help Paddington when he goes on his trip!
