Everyday Materials
Year 1 turned into intrepid explorers during geography this week. We set off on a 'journey' around the globe, discovering the icy North and South Poles and locating the hot Equator. We even tracked down vast deserts and talked about how different the climate is in each region. Best of all, we learnt that the World isn't flat—it’s a sphere.
In Year 1, our young scientists have been busy exploring the world around them.
During our topic on the seasons and weather, we rolled up our sleeves and planted bulbs, hopefully supporting our learning on how plants will grow and change throughout the year.
We have also been discovering the difference between everyday objects and the materials they are made of. To help find the best material for a cozy dog bed, we conducted our very first experiment to test for waterproof properties. Before starting, we made scientific predictions about what would happen—and we were thrilled to prove them right when every plastic material we tested successfully kept the water out.
We have been on an autumn walk around our school grounds. The children were asked to look at the leaves and their colours. Were they on the trees or on the floor? Could we spot any mini beasts or insects, animals or birds? Were there any flowers or seeds and what clothing did we need at this time of year? This is what we found and it was warm enough for just t-shirts as it was a very warm afternoon!
In DT we explored the journey of wheat from seed to harvest, learning how it is made into flour and then into bread. Using the skills of measuring, mixing and kneading, we then made a dough. Finally, after leaving it to rise we shaped the pitta breads and put them into the oven to cook.
Mr G surprised the children with a chilly but delicious treat on Monday afternoon. All children had yummy ice creams! Thank you Mr G!
Mr Bailey has visited us in school to make sure we start the year right by knowing how to stay safe online. We had a wonderful time discussing and learning all about how to keep safe on a range of devices and what to do if we ever felt unsafe.
It's the beginning of a new school year and the children who have come up from Reception to Year 1 have blown us away with their excitement and attitude to learning. Here are a few photos of them hard at work today. We all agree, Year 1 is a great place to be!
