Summer 1

Land Ahoy!

Well done Year 2. Ā You all did brilliantly in our Sponsored Walk/Run. Ā What a fun time we had!

This week, as part of our DT, we have been learning about different mechanisms. We made our own moving pictures using sliders and levers. This was so much fun and surprisingly easy to do but we had to make sure we didn't cut the card too close to the edge otherwise it ripped. We really enjoyed playing with our Gingerbread Man characters and pretending to chase the Gingerbread Man! We then created our own moving boat scene and started to design our own moving picture. We can't wait to make them.

In Maths, we have continued with our learning around shape and their properties. We played a game where we had to choose a shape and then describe its properties to our partner. This was harder than we thought. We had to think carefully about how many sides, vertices and lines of symmetry the shape had. Mrs King then gave us a puzzle to solve where we had to match up the pieces by looking at the properties of the shapes. Great work here Juniper!

Juniper Class were feeling just ducky after a very special visit from four VIPs — very important ducklings! Our Reception children have watched them hatch, waddle, grow, and even learn the ropes of swimming without getting their feathers in a flap. The children were all quackers with excitement! Not only was it lots of fun, but it also tied in perfectly with our Science learning about animals and their offspring. A truly egg-cellent experience for everyone!

Year 2 have been sailing the seven seas of geographical knowledge this week, and what anĀ unforgettable adventure it’s been! Using our giant world map, we charted a course across the continents!

Our crew then dropped anchor at the UK and Jamaica, discovering how pirates of old sought shelter in Kingston Harbour — shiver me timbers, what a hideout! We navigated the oceans using clever clues, proving we’re a class that can reallyĀ ā€˜sea’ the bigger picture.

To keep our knowledge shipshape, we sang our oceans and continents songs — what aĀ treasure chest of learning!Ā

We also compared the UK and Jamaica to the equator, spotting how their locations affect the weather. It’s safe to say we didn’tĀ blow hot and coldĀ on that challenge — we smashed it! Ā Well done Year 2!

In Maths this week, the children in Juniper have started to learn about shapes. The children were set the task of making shapes with a different number of sides on a geoboard using rubber bands. The children came up with some very imaginative shapes, great work all.

As part of our PSHE we have been learning about the importance of washing our hands. The glitter represented the germs so we could see how quickly germs spread. We then realised how much time we need to spend to ensure our hands are clean when we are washing them. The children really enjoyed this lesson, good work Juniper!

This half term in PE we are learning team games and dance. We have started this off by practising throwing a bean bag using an underarm throw and learning to dance along to a pirate 'Just Dance'. Here the children chose their own movements and then together in small groups they pieced them together. Great teamwork here Juniper, I loved how creative you were as well.

Juniper 2 have started their new maths unit today, looking at the value of coins and money. All of the children have made a superb start to this, well done Juniper!

To kick-start our new topic in Year 2, we started the new half term with a day all things pirate. Each child was given their own pirate's name, made a hook, hat, flag and created their own treasure map, ensuring they included an 'X Marks the Spot'!

During the afternoon, all of Year 2 worked together to find and solve different clues around the school. The children demonstrated some great teamwork here and had their pirate heads on.

Then, to finish off what was already an exciting day, the children met the wonderful authorsĀ Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler. They are known for writing the popular book 'Skeleton Island: Undercover Pirate'. A text that we will be reading in class. They were fantastic at telling the children all about their books and answering their questions. What a fun week we've had in Juniper!
