On Friday 19th June, The Polesworth School hosted the 3rd Great CAT Bake Off. Birchwood joined teams from The Polesworth School, Dordon Primary School and Millfield Primary School for a day of creativity, teamwork and baking excellence. Pupils from Year 5 to Year 8 put their skills to the test, producing an impressive range of cakes inspired by this year’s theme: the 2026 World Cup.
With football fever in the air, each team designed and created a unique show stopping cake, working hard to ensure their masterpiece was ready for the final judging. The standard of entries was exceptionally high, making the judges’ task more challenging than ever.
After presenting their designs and explaining the inspiration behind them, the teams eagerly awaited the results while the judges sampled each creation. Following careful deliberation, Millfield Primary School were crowned champions with their outstanding stadium-themed cake. Pupils from The Polesworth School secured an impressive runners-up position.
The event was a fantastic celebration of creativity, skill and collaboration, and it was clear that our schools are home to some incredibly talented young bakers. Congratulations to all the pupils who took part.
On Thursday 11th June, Year 6 welcomed a visit from the Warwickshire Road Safety Team. During the sessions, we explored different types of impulsiveness that can affect our behaviour near roads - including motor impulsiveness, attentional impulsiveness and non-planned impulsiveness. We also considered a range of factors that can influence decision-making when crossing roads, such as mobile phones, wearing headphones, our friends, running late and even our emotions at the time. As part of the discussion, we reflected on the possible consequences if something goes wrong when crossing a road, thinking carefully about how this could affect not only ourselves, but also others - including parents, friends and emergency services.
We were each given a bookmark to help us reflect on our own key motivators and to encourage us to make safer choices when near roads. Thank you, Warwickshire Road Safety Team.

On Friday 22nd May, the Year 6 children had a session with Healthy Futures about the importance of sleep. After a busy half term, this was a really welcomed session where we were taught the importance of the amount of sleep but also how to prepare for sleep.
We learned about melatonin and how things can affect the quality of sleep that we have. We now know that sleep is vital for keeping our bodies healthy: it helps repair our bodies from our day, helps our body grow and develop, and helps our brain function. It was enlightening when we counted our current amount of sleep compared to the recommended amount! We will certainly be adopting more healthy sleep habits.
With the ducklings visiting Year 1, Year 6 couldn’t resist playing with them once their exams were over! The children loved stroking the ducklings and watching them splash around in their paddling pool.
As a reward for their fantastic effort and determination over SATs week, Year 6 were treated to breakfast rolls on Friday. They had a selection of bacon and sausage, as well as all their favourite sauces! The children really enjoyed sitting and chatting after a hard week of exams and revision!
As part of their maths revision, Year 6 made the most of the sunshine to get outside and compete in a maths trail around the grounds of the school. They worked together to find and solve challenging reasoning problems which had been hidden all over the school!
